Create a Unique Selling Proposition

A Unique Selling Proposition or USP is the one thing that you offer that will want to make people do business with you. This is what will put you above the competition; and in today's day and age competition is all over the place no matter what industry you are dealing with.

Almost every successful business, whether it is an insurance agency or other operation, has a USP that puts them above and beyond the rest of the competition. Generally speaking, this is how small businesses grow year after year until they are known world wide. There are many companies that have gone from small to large in a short period of time thanks to a USP that did a great job.

For example, a company like Federal Express moved to the forefront by using the USP "when it absolutely and positively has to be there overnight. ' This may sound simple enough, but it made Federal Express a major player in the industry in no time at all. People took notice of their USP, and from there the company began to take off.

So as you can see, if you want to take your business to the next level, having a powerful USP is one thing that you will need to look into. The longer you wait, the longer it will be before you start to grow in a big way.

You must remember that every potential client you contact will want to know what they will get by doing business with you. If you cannot tell them the benefits, there is a good chance that they will move on and go elsewhere.

The number one reason that most insurance agents do not succeed with their marketing materials is that they do not tell people the benefits. They do not do a good enough job in showing prospects what they have to offer.

Here are five things that you should keep in mind when developing a USP.

  1. A USP that is longer than one sentence, two max, is not going to work. Think short and sweet.
  2. No matter what kind of business you are dealing with, every employee needs to know how to work within the USP.
  3. Make sure that everything you do revolves around your USP. Staying consistent is the best way to bring your USP to the forefront.
  4. Your USP should show what you do, and what you offer over your competitors. In other words, what can you offer that every other company cannot?
  5. If your USP does not work, it is time to go back to the drawing board. But when it comes down to it, getting your USP right the first time is quite important.
